While Coteau des Prairies Lodge does not offer guided hunting or fishing opportunities at this time, we do welcome sportsmen of all types who need lodging for their trip. For hunters, we offer a complimentary heated game cleaning facility which is also a kennel and for guests with canine companions, but dogs are not allowed inside the lodge. Trap shooting from the ridge of the coteau is always a highlight for our shotgun toting guests.
Hunting and fishing are two of the staples for recreation in our quiet corner of North Dakota…and for good reason!
Waterfowl hunting is the crown jewel for outdoorsmen here in the Prairie Pothole Region. Ducks and geese love our prairie potholes for nesting and raising their young and we have more potholes than we care to count! In recent years, populations of the Canada Goose and numerous species of duck including Mallard, Pintail, Canvasback, Wood Duck, Gadwall, Wigeon, Redhead and Teal have been consistently high. Between the local birds which nest in our wetlands and the birds which migrate through each spring and fall, this place is literally packed with waterfowl.
Some 7,000 acres of beautiful wetland-rich prairie make up the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge which lies directly north of the lodge just out the Great Room window. This prime waterfowl habitat area is well known for producing abundant wildlife and is a popular destination for hunters and fishermen alike.
Our area also provides exceptional hunting of upland game, especially Ring-necked Pheasant, but also Sharp-tailed Grouse and Partridge as well as Wild Turkey. In fact, during your stay at the lodge, you are certain to spot at least one of these species from the Great Room window, and perhaps you will spot them all.
Speaking of wildlife sightings, you are also likely to run across Whitetail Deer and any number of our local fur bearers including Raccoon, Fox, Mink, Muskrat, Badger, Beaver and the elusive, but fun to hunt, Coyote.
As you can imagine with all these wetlands there must be some good fishing. This is definitely true! Our area features terrific fishing year-round. Our numerous local lakes, sloughs and even rivers make for great fishing if you are after Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Perch, Crappie, Catfish and more!
